Saints’ Drew Brees is world’s 52nd most famous athlete
ESPN released its second annual “World Fame 100” list Tuesday, and one New Orleans Saints player made the cut.
The list combines endorsements with social media following and internet searches to determine the most famous athletes in the world.
Saints quarterback Drew Brees ranked 52nd on the list for 2017. The list notes that Brees has $12 million of endorsements, 2.7 million Twitter followers, 2 million Facebook followers and 465,000 Instagram followers.
Here’s further explanation for Brees’ ranking: “Brees will be forever beloved in New Orleans for delivering the Saints and emotional Super Bowl championship four years after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. He also will go down as one of the most prolific quarterbacks in NFL history, currently ranked third in career passing yards and touchdowns. Indeed, Brees has come a long way since being benched in favor of 41-year-old Doug Flutie back in 2003.”
Brees ranked 44th on the list last year.
The world list features many soccer players with high rankings. Cristiano Ronaldo is No. 1, Lionel Messi is No. 3 and Neymar is No. 6.
The top American football player is Tom Brady at No. 21. Cam Newton is second at No. 47, and Brees is third at No. 52.
Former Newman stars Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Jr. made the list, too. Manning is 60th, moving up from 66th in 2016, while Beckham is 64th, a fall from 40th last year.
